Gary Shellman, Ph.D., speaking on “NATO’s Path to the Present”

Gary Shellman is UNA-GM Past President & Former Assistant Director – UWM Institute

of World Affairs. He is a historian of modern Europe and a former journalist.  At the

UWM Institute of World Affairs for 20 years, he developed more than 600 public

programs focusing on international relations, global economics, and U.S. foreign policy,

including the annual George F. Kennan Forum on International Issues. Dr. Shellman

taught at UW-River Falls, UNC-Charlotte, Carroll University, Concordia University

Wisconsin, and UW-Milwaukee.

  Harry Targ, Ph.D., speaking on “NATO, Ukraine, and U.S. Foreign Policy:  A

Peace Perspective”

During his talk, Professor Targ narrates a PowerPoint presentation titled

“NATO and Ukraine.”

Harry Targ is a professor of political science emeritus and has taught foreign policy,

U.S./Latin American relations, international political economy, and labor studies in the

Department of Political Science and the Program of Peace Studies at Purdue

University.  He has published books and articles on foreign policy, international

relations, and U.S. political economy.  He serves on the steering committee of

Wisconsin Peace Action.

Panelists

Dr. Rachel Buff speaking on “Dreams of Democracy by Asylum Seekers”  Rachel Ida Buff teaches history and Comparative Ethnic Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is an author, most recently of  A is for Asylum Seeker:  Words for People on the Move / A de Asilo:  Palabras para  Personas en Movimiento.  Currently, she is working on a novel, Holy Toledo, and a book of essays about migration and survival, Thinking Like a Caravan.

Attorney Tim Muth speaking on “Challenges of Furthering Democracy Globally“  Tim Muth is a civil rights lawyer in the US and a writer and analyst on human rights and political issues in El Salvador.  Tim is a staff attorney at the ACLU of WI where his work focuses on immigrant rights and on the criminal justice system among other civil rights issues. He is also the founder and principal author of El Salvador Perspectives, a leading English language source of news and information about contemporary El Salvador.

Dr. Paru Shah speaking on “Assaults on Democracy  Domestically”

Dr. Paru Shah is an Associate Professor in the Political Science Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Dr. Shah has authored numerous scholarly publications exploring her research interests in race and American politics, ethnicity and politics, urban politics, and public policy analysis.

Dr. Chia Youyee Vang is Interim Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer and Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She oversees the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) that is responsible for advancing diversity and equity and fostering inclusion for all members of the campus community. She is a professor of history and has been on the UWM faculty since 2006.

Deja Garner is the Director of Equity and Outreach at the Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort (WAVE) Educational Fund, a grassroots gun violence prevention organization in Wisconsin with an emphasis on evidence-based solutions to gun violence for impacted communities.

Tim Daly is the Senior Program Officer in the Gun Violence Prevention & Justice Reform Program with the Joyce Foundation. For more than 25 years, the Joyce Foundation has been committed to supporting research, education, and policy solutions to reduce gun violence and help make communities safer through a three-part strategy of focusing on gun violence prevention, justice system reform, and violence intervention

(Members of the MPS United Nations Schools of International Learning Team) Along with Annette Robertson & Michelle Wade 

discuss their unique perspectives about how the program developed and describe the experiences of the students and their families. 

The United Nations Schools of International Learning (UNSIL) program is implemented in grades 4 through 8 at 13 of the most diverse MPS schools where students speak more than 35 languages.  Students learn about the UN and its member countries throughout the world.  They think critically about real world problems, research solutions, and work together to develop a world perspective.

Dr. Michael E. Mann is Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science and Director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University. Dr. Mann will discuss where we stand with this challenge in the wake of the most recent report of the U.N. Climate Assessment and in the lead-up to the all-important U.N. Climate Summit later this year in Glasgow.


 
 

Video of the virtual presentation by Tony Gonzalez on “Adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples:  14 Years Later” originally given on Sunday – October 10th, 2021

Tony Gonzalez is the Liaison of the American Indian Movement West to the United Nations and former Executive Director of the International Indian Treaty Council.  Previously, he coordinated the International Indian Treaty’s Council’s participation at the UN Commission on Human Rights in Geneva. He has worked with the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations to complete the Universal Declaration on the Rights & Principles of Indigenous Peoples.
