An Introduction to the United Nations Schools of International Learning

The First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee - Sunday Forum Presents

An Introduction to the United Nations Schools of International Learning

Sunday – October 31st, 2021

11 AM – Noon

A Virtual Zoom Program with a Panel Presentation by Jennie Ekstein, Robert Lang, Mary Ellen Ruzga, & Kaela Zielinski Members of the MPS United Nations Schools of International Learning Team & Annette Robertson & Michelle Wade
The presenters will discuss their unique perspectives about how the program developed and describe the experiences of the students and their families.
The United Nations Schools of International Learning (UNSIL) program is implemented in grades 4 through 8 at 13 of the most diverse MPS schools where students speak more than 35 languages.  students learn about the UN and its member countries throughout the world.  They think critically about real world problems, research solutions, and work together to develop a world perspective.
Through this experience, students master critical academic skills such as researching, writing, and presenting with a focus on world affairs and current events.  Students gain skills in debate, negotiation, and conflict resolution, and they develop empathy and tolerance – all competencies that will serve them well in college, career, and life.
Each year culminates in a World Fair held at the UWM Arena in downtown Milwaukee where students present their work to each other and to the community as well as enjoy cultural performances from fellow MPS students.  Since 2017, this popular event has offered an opportunity for the Greater Milwaukee to learn more about the world community.
